So, what exactly is a “helical” wind turbine and what are its pros and cons? With all the wind turbine options out there now, why should you care about this particular type?

These are the things good and bad about a helical wind turbine type device that will help answer that question…

The helical wind turbine is a vertical wind energy generator – The helical wind turbine is a vertical-axis wind turbine that spins in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the earth. The shape of this type of wind turbine is much like a DNA helix or a spiral staircase.

It is very compact - This type of wind device fits in a very small space and therefore has a very small footprint. This is in contrast to the more efficient horizontal-axis wind turbine that tends to seek the wind in all different directions and will have to have a much larger footprint, because of the path the rotor blade cuts. The rotor blades fit inside a vertical wind turbine and are somewhat protected, or caged in some cases, and simply just do not take up the space that a horizontal wind turbine will take up, making them often the perfect solution for the roofs.

Very expensive - There is no doubt that this type of wind turbine is probably the most expensive of all. This is because it is very aesthetically styled and therefore you are paying a lot for the look. Usually they are mounted on a roof - Mounting on the roof is the only option available for some people in some situations. The helical wind turbine is of course much more acceptable in urban setting because of its smaller footprint and less obtrusive visual presentation. If you are living in the country however, it may be not worth the money to invest in something that is nice to look at, that most people will never see.

Borderline hypnotic - This is a very positive aspect of the helical wind turbine. If you buy one of these specifically, then you are a lot less likely to encounter any negative feedback from your neighbors. The reason for this is the wind turbine itself is seen more like any other ornamental fixture on your roof. Very few people complain and as a matter of fact many people just enjoy looking at the helical wind turbine do its work - so much that they sit and watch it, just like people will do with a babbling brook – it can be very relaxing to watch these devices spin.

In the final analysis, the helical wind turbine can be a good compromise between the efficiency of the horizontal wind turbine and the looks of a vertical device. Especially if you are living in a city and do not mind spending the extra money to avoid a potential hassle with your neighbors.

There are a number of wind turbine facts that you should know in order to get the most out of one these devices at your home.

Wind turbine facts aren’t all dry and boring and some are downright exiting…well, sort of…

Cube Rule – For every 1 mile per hour of additional wind, you get 3 times that much out in terms of power created. This means that it will be likely be worth your while to mount your wind turbine 20 feet higher in the air, even if that move only gets you another 1 mile per hour of average wind.

Your roof can be a great source of power, but it is not the best place – The roof is the area where there is the most power available, no question about it. That is because there is so much volume up there and so many roofs around the world that could serve as platforms for wind turbines.

One of the more practical of the wind turbine facts, is that the cost of the device has little to do with the amount of power you can get out of it – There are very expensive home wind turbines that produce 1 kW of power and there are very inexpensive wind turbines that produce 1 kW of power. The differences are largely in terms of aesthetics and in marketing. Since home wind turbine power has become so popular of late, there are a number of new players who have gotten into manufacturing these units. So, you can pay $1,000 or $15,000 for virtually the same power production – therefore, watch out and make sure you know what you are buying.

Horizontal axis wind turbines are much more efficient than vertical axis wind turbines – Horizontal axis wind turbines can produce efficiencies in the 40-45% range. Vertical units however can only produce efficiencies in the 30-35% range. While horizontal units are more efficient though, they are difficult to have on your roof because many communities ban them because of issues like shadow flicker.

You can sell the power you make back to your power company – If you don’t need all the power you make, you can sell the overage back to the power company you presently use. They are required to buy it from you at the price they have to pay to make the next unit of power in their plants.

You can do repairs to a wind turbine yourself – Wind energy is very simple which means you can usually do the work and replacement of common parts yourself without the aid of a professional repair person.

The sooner you act on these wind turbine facts and buy your turbine kit, the sooner you will start living the dream of free power at home.
